Fourteen underprivileged Indonesian women have begun three months of on-the-job training at AYANA Resort and Spa Bali as part of the second annual ‘ROLE Models” program in partnership with R.O.L.E Foundation. The women are training as either Food &Beverage servers, Cooks or Spa Therapists.

Here’s another up close interview with one of them: a fully energized and independent girl, Luh Pande Dewi.

” Independence is ultimate. Everything in your life depends on you.” Luh Pande Dewi- ROLE Models trainee as a waiter at Padi restaurant.

Where are you from? I am from Klungkung, south east part of Bali.

What do you think about this R.O.L.E program and how did you get the opportunity?
R.O.L.E is like a school that I have been dreaming of, and somewhat like a dormitory. I got the information from a relative who was a R.O.L.E student. She finished her training and now works at a restaurant in Sanur. Having witnessed her success, I signed myself up to study English, cooking, gardening, basic F&B service and other skills at R.O.L.E’s Nusa Dua training facility.

What gets you excited about being a R.O.L.E student? And what makes you nervous?
That I can study and practice at the same time, and that I am at a learning ground to learn how to be independent. I learn to do everything on my own, to take responsibility eventhough I am only 18 years old, to learn to save for my own education. However I am at the same time nervous about working with people who are so talented in this big resort.

Has a career in the hotel industry always been your passion? If so, in which area specifically?
I love the Food and Beverage industry. And to be talented in that area, I know the first thing I have to do is to master the basics. And how lucky I am to be able to learn it here at AYANA.

What is your message to friends?
Never settle for anything but the best, and never count on others. You have to make your own path to success.

What do you want to achieve?
To be a successful businesswoman. I want to run my own restaurant someday.
