AYANA Zeitgeist

Translated from German, Zeitgeist means "the spirit of the moment", and is the key principle underpinning AYANA's service philosophy. Here, we share our inside tips and favorite haunts to help you experience the AYANA Zeitgeist.

Rooms & Villas

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, but forget trying to imitate his mother’s home cooking. Research shows that the best ‘love drug’ is chocolate, with just a few pieces able to affect blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, arousing excitement and alertness.

The science behind it apparently goes like this: Chocolate contains the organic compound phenylethylamine, a so-called ‘chocolate amphetamine’ as it releases dopamine and increases seratonin levels, to elevate mood and feelings of wellbeing and happiness. Phenylethylamine is also called the ‘love drug’ as it causes pulse rate to quicken, resulting in a similar feeling to falling in love. And who doesn’t love that feeling!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to see how we can sneak chocolate into the daily diet of the target of our adoration, to ensure we set the right mood. Here are few ideas for those staying with us at AYANA Resort and Spa Bali, and RIMBA Jimbaran Bali by AYANA:

The legend of the martini is no secret. And despite arguments about when and where this drink was born, we believe there’s just no beating the magic that comes from the original gin-vermouth-olive recipe and all the modern twists we see today, which give us endless reasons to keep sipping! Here at the Martini Bar at AYANA Resort and Spa Bali, we introduce our Houdinis of Martinis who turn your beverage into an elixir of quietude, E. B. White style.

Our two Houdinis are still dizzy from recently competing in the “VIVE Mixo Concept” Mixologist Competition in Jakarta, bringing back 1st and 3rd trophies. The first champion, Aryanta, is also a sport enthusiast and has been behind the bar at AYANA for six years which he describes as “The most exciting years of my life.”
Aryanta’s Recommendation: Shoyu Martini (Grey Goose, Strawberry Puree, Japanese Soya, Basil Leaves, served with Strawberries & Soya Dip)

Our bronze medalist Intaran has spent seven years hopping from one bar to another around AYANA’s 15 dining venues, including Rock Bar, Kisik, Damar Terrace, Sami Sami,?and now Martini Bar where he has fallen in love with the 35+ different martinis on the menus. He cheekily reveals the secret to mastering his craft: “A bartender has to love to drink so that they can really understand the taste of every drop they stir” — or shake, if you’re serving James Bond.
Intaran’s Recommendation: Gimlet (Bombay Sapphire Gin, Lime Cordial, Lime) and Bloody Bucket (Reversed Emulsified Sucro, Egg White, Absolut Vodka, Tomato Juice, Lemon, Rosemary, Red Chili)

Oh and while the Houdinis are preparing your drink of choice, their colleague Eddy at Dava Restaurant would be more than delighted to sketch your caricature for you to take home! Here’s one of his art pieces. That must be the ‘post-martini’ shot!

On Thursday, 25 December, the team at AYANA Resort and Spa took visiting friend and artist Ross Burburry for Christmas morning to the Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak (YKPA) orphanage in Denpasar. The team took along gifts and some much needed supplies for the children and staff.

The orphanage was founded by husband and wife duo Ibu Putu Etiartini and Pak Michael. The couple could no longer tolerate the suffering of children begging on the streets of Kuta and started actively seeking information and offering assistance to these children.

It started off quite simply in 2007 with a Beach School in Kuta run by volunteers on bamboo mats using a tarp as a whiteboard. From here it evolved and now houses 35 children aged 1-18 years old. Food, shelter, health care, school and much love is provided to these children in need who could have ended up working on the streets as young as one year old. Additional classes are run outside of the orphanage while a Women’s Shelter provides prenatal care for pregnant women in need.

A lot of children don’t know when they were born so the orphanage chooses Valentine’s Day as their collective birthday and have a party every year to celebrate on this day. Love!

Walking through the orphanage is quite a contrast to their circumstances that brought the children here and put smiles on their faces. They are some of the most polite and affectionate children you could ever meet. Ross played guitar and sang for the children who were thrilled to have a private gig. They clapped and cheered and even put in some requests for John Legend and Katy Perry! It was beautiful to be there and we are honored to be a part of this ongoing relationship.

On the way home in the car there were a lot of realizations about the life we all have. You really don’t get to choose how you grow up, what nationality you are, who your parents are or where you live. But you do get to choose to help someone who might be unable to help themselves. We look forward to continuing to help these children and encourage you to join us; even if that is a little visit next time you are in Bali or a donation not always in the form of money but of food or books that you can spare from your own cupboard or shelves. What a way to spend Christmas. A day I am sure we won’t forget in a hurry.
